The outing will also include a visit to the railhead of the old narrow-gauge steam line that used to haul indigenous wood from the escarpment and valleys around St Paul’s, as well as following its route down the Schoemanskloof to the railway station at Elandshoek. From here we will visit what is left of the old saw mill and forestry settlement at Elandshoek. Then we hop across and follow the route of the old rope or cable way that was constructed to convey logs down the mountain from Berlin to the mill. A shaded spot to enjoy a picnic lunch will be found near the Berlin forestry station or under the trees at the Barrets on the Kaapsehoop hiking route. From here you can either depart back to Nelspruit via Kaapsehoop or stop at Salvador’s on the way for a farewell drink.
