The Yeoville Ridge rises above the remains of fashionable Doornfontein, its last few mansions clinging to the koppie, and has commanding views over the City. In any other City this unique sense of place would be celebrated, but in Joburg even the worshippers who braved the neglect and piles and rubbish are no longer welcome.
The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation recently commissioned a heritage study into the Ridge, and will be campaigning to have its heritage value recognised. Join Kathy Munro as she explores the Ridge, the area’s grand apartment blocks Westminster Mansions, Helvetia Court, Diamond Court, and its unique water towers. She is joined by Richard Holden, a local resident who refused to be bowed by the City’s neglect and has almost single-handedly cleaned up mountains of rubbish on historic Stewart Pass, and Gabrielle Ozynski, an artist and neighbourhood activist.
