In wanting to broaden our approach to heritage it is with pleasure your committee invites you to an illustrated talk by Jannie Groenewald on fynbos with particular emphasis on the Rhenosterveld.
Jannie who has an MSc in Conservation Ecology from the University of Stellenbosch has been described as “one of the most passionate, bright, interested and interesting ecologists … with a passion for every life form and its conservation” He also has a new plant species, Haworthia groenewaldii named for him.
With regard to Rhenosterveld of which Rhenosterbos is the dominant specie, it is interesting to note that Edmund Burrows in his book “Overberg Outspan” (page 146) makes this comment, “In pre-merino days, old-timers recall the lush grass standing so high on the hill-sides that animals grazing in it were hidden, but the woolen sheep changed that . The ubiquitous rhenoster-bush (Elytroppapus rhinocerotis) was carried in the animal’s fleece and disseminated more thoroughly than the machine could ever have done……“
Enough said by me. Please do join us for this interesting talk by an expert!
