This was the first and last battle where they were all brought into play, each at different places over a wide front. Tour led by Prof. Louis Changuion, author of Silence of the Guns – The History of the Long Toms of the Anglo-Boer War.
06:30: Participants wishing to have breakfast at the Belfast Engen 1 Stop Wimpy are suggested to leave Nelspruit not later than this.
07:00: Participants wishing to catch a lift to meet at Nelspruit Crossing (KLCBT). Contact Duncan Ballantyne on 082 329 7105
8:30: All to meet at the Battle of Berg-en-dal War Memorial, on the N4 about 4km east of the turnoff to Belfast. Bring your breakfast and coffee and eat on arrival at the monument.
Itinerary:
- Depart for the first site, Elandskop, 9km south east of Berg-en-dal.
- Botha’s headquarters, about 3km east of Berg-en-dal.
- Witrand, about 4km north of Berg-en-dal.
- On the road to Dullstroom, the old monument, dating back to 1886, on Monument Hill, destroyed by the British during the war and rebuilt in 1905.
- Along the Stoffberg road, Suikerboskop, about 13km north west of Berg-en-dal.
Notes: Lunch will be a picnic after the tour. Farm road conditions are as yet unknown, so it will be best to only use high ground clearance vehicles. Walking conditions to where the guns stood are also unknown so it is recommended to come with footwear suitable for bush walking.
