The post reports to the head of RIC (Research, Information & Collections Department) and is responsible for the following: undertake research in culture, history and related fields for Msunduzi and Ncome Museum; organize and undertake fieldwork and interviews and transcribe the information; collect related museum items (through collection trips); write text and obtain visuals for exhibitions / publications etc; provide input for new research projects; make research information and findings available to the public i.e. publishing papers in journals, presenting papers at conferences, giving talks to the public; respond to enquiries from the public and staff; contribute to the museum’s journal and Ulwazi magazine (i.e. collect and edit papers), newsletter and other publications; organize events. The post requires independent driving for meetings, collecting trips and occasional travelling to Ncome Museum (satellite of Msunduzi Museum); occasional assistance in the Library and Collection Centre and occasional translation of research or other material.

Requirements: Social Science or BA Degree in History / Cultural History/ Anthropology/ Sociology. At least 2 years’ experience in research. Good verbal and written communication skills. Computer literacy. Valid Code B driver’s license. Proficiency in English and Zulu or Afrikaans. An understanding of KwaZulu-Natal’s history and its various cultures. Track-record of published research materials.
Recommendations: A relevant post graduate qualification.
Competencies: Have an energetic, resourceful and flexible approach to the requirements of the post. The ability and enthusiasm to engage as a team player on a wide variety of museum projects and events. Punctuality.
