The name “De Rust” originated from the small rural town in the Western Cape where the Bezuidenhout family settled in the 1800s prior to moving to the Old Transvaal.

Building plans were drafted by MA Meiscke in the early 1900s and the construction work was entrusted to JJ Joubert around 1905-1906. Rosewood fireplaces, Italian tiles, Brooky lace, Steel pressed ceilings, wooden handrails etc., were imported from Europe to compliment the Victorian style main building.

The wallpaper was imported from England. The mosaic corridor tiles were imported from Italy. All the wooden floors consist of pinewood, originating from the state of Oregon in America. The 4 fireplaces are made from rosewood and are fully equipped with mantelpieces mirrors and yellow copper finishing. Colourful lead glass windows decorate the main entrance as well as the door of the men’s smoking room that exits toward the veranda. The ceilings are all made of pressed steel.

To suit his taste, Frederick Jacobus Bezuidenhout went to Europe by ship to handpick the above materials. The building materials were delivered to Africa by ship via the Lourenco Marques Port and was then transported +/- 550km’s by ox-wagon to the Old Transvaal.
