There was a wonderful book launch at Northwards recently. Neil Viljoen gave a sparkling, fascinating talk on the making of his biography of Jose Dale Lace. He discussed how a biography gathers different types of evidence, speaking alongside the Hal Hurst portrait of Jose in her pink ball gown.

The famous portrait

It was incredible to launch this book in the drawing room of Northwards, designed by Baker and home of the Dale Lace family from 1905 until the disastrous fire of 1911. Jose was the Queen of Johannesburg society during the Edwardian era.

This special event was enhanced by the presence of Jose and John Dale Lace's descendants, who also contributed to the launch.

To order a copy of Neil's biography, "Jose Dale Lace: A Collection of Selves," published by Footprint Press, please contact Barbara Cron. The post-launch price for a paperback is R450. mail@joburgheritage.org.za.

With only a small print run, this book is sure to become highly sought after.
