Last year there was a change in ownership of Parker's Building in Fish Hoek. The building lies between 1st and 2nd Avenue on Kommetjie Road, across from the Outspan. The new owner, Gavin Webb, gave me access to the building plans. Much to everyone's surprise, the building had been constructed in 1923 for a Mr Stein, a Jewish gentleman. This led to more revelations when the plans for the building next door were analysed.
I produced a poster to record and to share the new information. The poster, being Part 1 of the short Trail, thus celebrates some unknown Jewish heritage and the site of Mr AP Jones' first shop at Nr 10 Kommetjie Road.
It is planned to produce a second poster (Part 2) to cover the lesser known facts of other nearby buildings occupied by the first retailers in the coastal town. Click here to view a large version of the poster.
Copies of the poster are available for free from the barista in the building.
