Apart from a visit to the recently restored NZASM regional office (currently the municipal building) we will be visiting several new sites and sights not seen on our previous visit a few years back. One is the site and memorial to the railway disaster of 16th November 1949 when 63 people died as well as the mass grave where they were buried. Our host for the day will be Rudolph Pretorius of Waterval Boven, who is a passionate historian.
We will also go on a town tour looking at some more historical and architecturally significant buildings. Except for some pre-1900 railway houses in the Cape Colony and Natal, but with the charming Dutch influence, so called Wilhelmiens structures, Boven boasts examples of the complete range of railway houses ever to be built in South Africa. In countries like the UK where the preservation of its railway heritage is of importance, Boven could have been restored to its former glory of a quaint, beautifully situated railway village. Operating as a living museum where people are residing, manufacturing and trading selectively, it could have created an excellent tourism attraction offering as generating income heritage asset to the region.
