In 1936, the year in which Johannesburg celebrated its Golden Jubilee, the Jubilee Memorial Committee purchased a 42 acre site east of Highlands North to establish a living memorial for the city’s ageing Rand Pioneers and names it Randjeslaagte. Architects Kallenbach, Kennedy and Furner adopted a garden suburb plan for the site. The first cottage was opened on 15 October 1938 by the Mayor of Johannesburg, JS Fotheringham, and the Randjes Memorial Hall donated by the Chamber of Mines was opened on 23 September 1939.
